Val Bourne's Seeds of Wisdom column was one of the most popular parts of The Gardening section of The Daily Telegraph for over five years. This light-hearted book is a selection of some of those seasonal tips from garden owners and head gardeners - strung together wittily.

These vary from the strictly practical, like Martin Rickard's advice, to plant any new ferns in September, October or November to the succinct "never go into your garden without your secateurs" from Lord Carrington . Others are rather whimsical like Helen Dillon's tip "When choosing a dog for your garden, consider its sex and measure its legs: bitches make yellow puddles marks on the lawn and males do damaging squirts on the evergreens. But if you choose a he-dog with short legs( like a miniature dachshund ) he lifts his leg with enthusiasm and invariably misses."
